Q. What can the savings policies be set to?
A. TonerSaver supports savings from 0-50%.

Q. What happens when a user and printer are set to different saving policies?
A. TonerSaver will select the policy that has the greater priority. If the priorities are the same, then TonerSaver will select the policy which offers the higher quality.

Q. How do I determine the optimal savings level to optimize print quality and cost savings?
A. The quality of output at various savings levels will depend on the printer model and driver being used. The calibration page tool featured in the TonerSaver Printer Manager allows you to determine the optimum setting for you printer.

Q. Can TonerSaver work with third-party toner cartridges?
A. Yes. TonerSaver works with both OEM and third-party toner cartridges.

 

 

PRINTERS AND DRIVERS

Q. What printers does TonerSaver work with?
A. TonerSaver supports laser printers from all major printer manufacturers including: HP, Lexmark, Canon and Xerox. The drivers for these laser printers must use one of the following languages: PCL 5C, PCL 5E, PCL 6 and PCL XL

Q. Does TonerSaver support inkjet printers?
A. TonerSaver does not currently support inkjet printers. Our InkSaver product offers support for inkjet models. Please visit www.inksaver.com for more information.

Q. Does TonerSaver work with multi-function printers and/or copiers?
A. Support for these models is dependant on the driver available. Savings can only be realized when printing through a printer driver; savings would not be applied when using the photocopier or fax functions of these devices.

Q. TonerSaver works with networked printers. Can TonerSaver also work with locally attached printers?
A. Yes, locally attached printers are supported. Currently printers which are attached locally must be manually added to the TonerSaver Local Object Manager.

Q. What types of printer drivers are supported?
A. TonerSaver currently supports PCL 5C, PCL 5E, PCL 6 and PCL XL based drivers.

Q. Are PostScript printers supported?
A. This release of TonerSaver does not support PostScript printers. You can save toner with a PostScript printer by installing and using the manufacturer's PCL driver.

Q. Are Unidrv-based drivers supported?
. A. TonerSaver supports Unidrv-based drivers. We do require the TonerSaver driver to be installed on both the client and print server in this case.

Q. Does TonerSaver support color printers?
A. Yes, TonerSaver supports both monochrome and color printing.

Q. How does TonerSaver affect the speed of printing?
A. TonerSaver has been designed to have minimal impact on printing performance. There is no noticeable delay when printing with TonerSaver installed.

Q. What effect does TonerSaver have on the printing process?
A. TonerSaver operates behind the scenes and has no noticeable effect on the printing process. If the TonerSaver Server is down print jobs will proceed with no savings applied.

Q. Does TonerSaver need to be installed on my print server?
A. TonerSaver is not required to be present on the print server. However, in the case of Unidrv-based drivers, TonerSaver must be installed on both the client and the print server.

Q. Does TonerSaver replace my original printer driver?
A. No. The TonerSaver driver works with the installed driver and does not replace it, modify it or inhibit its functionality.

TONERSAVER SERVER

Q. What components comprise the TonerSaver Server?
A. The TonerSaver Server is comprised of the following components: the TonerSaver Service, TonerSaver Administration and the TonerSaver Driver.

Q. Can I have multiple TonerSaver servers deployed?
A. Yes. The TonerSaver Server is designed to work independently which allows you to deploy multiple servers.

Q. Do I need multiple TonerSaver servers if my company is composed of more than one site?
A. TonerSaver works over VPN connections; if your sites are not connected via VPN you would need one server per site.

Q. I need to replace the computer running the TonerSaver Server - what impact will this have?
A. You can designate a new computer as the TonerSaver Server and install it on this system. You would then need to update the registry settings for any systems deployed with TonerSaver Administration or TonerSaver Driver.

Q. What happens if the TonerSaver Server is down?
A. If the TonerSaver Server is down print jobs will proceed with no savings applied.

Q. What is the TonerSaver Service?
A. The TonerSaver Service is the component that receives user and printer information from a TonerSaver Client during a print job and returns the proper savings value.

Q. Where does the TonerSaver Service need to be installed?
A. The TonerSaver Service must be installed on a machine in the network which will function as the TonerSaver Server.

TONERSAVER ADMINISTRATION
Q. What is TonerSaver Administration?
A. TonerSaver Administration is a Microsoft Management Console snap-in and provides a graphical user interface for managing users, printers and savings values with TonerSaver.

Q. Where does TonerSaver Administration need to be installed?
A. TonerSaver Administration must be installed on the machine selected to function as the TonerSaver Server. It can also be installed on additional computers in the domain to enable remote access to the TonerSaver Server.

Q. Can I delegate TonerSaver Administration to specific users?
A. Yes. You can give other users rights to access and manage TonerSaver Administration.

Q. Are there a maximum number of users TonerSaver can work with?
A. No. TonerSaver has no maximum number for users.

Q. Can I disable TonerSaver for specific users or printers?
A. Yes. TonerSaver Administration gives you the ability to suspend and resume savings.

Q. Can I set users and printers to a default savings value?
A. Yes. TonerSaver Administration allows you to set a default savings value for your organization.

TONERSAVER DRIVER

Q. What is the TonerSaver Driver?
A. The TonerSaver Driver interacts with the TonerSaver Service to determine what savings value to apply to each print job.

Q. Where does the TonerSaver Driver need to be installed?
A. The Driver must be installed on each client machine or workstation.

Q. How can I deploy the TonerSaver Driver to the client machines?
A. The TonerSaver Installer creates both an MSI package and a batch file which can be used for driver deployment. Active Directory Group Policy, SMS, network or manual installation can be used to deploy the driver.

Q. How can I remove the TonerSaver Driver from the client machines?
A. The TonerSaver Driver should be removed utilizing the same method that was used to install it. For example, If Active Directory Group Policy was used to deploy the TonerSaver Driver, then this method should be used to remove it. If the driver has been installed manually it will be present in the Add or Remove Programs control panel and can be removed from there.

DATA

Q. Does TonerSaver require a database?
A. No. TonerSaver does not require a third party database. It uses an internal data store.

Q. What kind of information is stored in the activity log?
A. For each print job the log stores the date and time, page count, savings value applied, workstation name, document name and the application used.

A. System Requirements are:

Q. Is Linux/UNIX supported?
A. TonerSaver supports printing from a Windows client to a Linux/UNIX print server. TonerSaver is currently not supported on Linux/UNIX workstations.

Q. Is Novell NetWare supported?
A. Currently Novell NetWare is not supported.

Q. Is Windows NT 4.0 supported?
A. Currently Windows NT 4.0 is not supported.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Q. I have installed the TonerSaver Driver but the registry values do not appear to be present.
A. The user must have administrative rights on the system for the TonerSaver registry values to be successfully created.

Q. Does Windows Firewall or other firewalls affect TonerSaver?
A. Yes, TonerSaver needs to communicate via TCP\IP ports 8898 and 8899; Windows Firewall or other firewalls must be disabled or the ports must be added to the Exceptions tab in the Windows Firewall control panel.
